Environment minister Peter Garrett has given the proposed Tamar River pulp mill until 2011 to complete a series of environmental tests before it can secure approval.

There are concerns the construction of the mill will impact on fisheries and the fragile marine environment.

US President George W. Bush will honour John Howard with the Presidential Medal of Freedom next week.

A White House spokesperson said the Medal honours Howard's role in fighting terrorism and promoting democracy and peace abroad.

Australian Senator Sarah Hanson-Young will be holding a press conference today discussing the topic.

In the US, The New York Times has broken an editorial taboo by opening the front page to advertisers.

The appearance is supposedly a means to enhance income as more and more readers shift to online newspapers.

In Tasmania, scientists have proposed building a fence to prevent the spread of a cancer that's threatening the Tasmanian Devil with extinction.

The contagious disease has already infected two-thirds of the population and unless action is taken the Tasmanian Devil could be extinct within twenty years.

The fence is planned to separate healthy and infected animals.
