Harry Nicolaides from Melbourne has been sentenced to 3 years in a Thai prison, on charges of lese majeste.

Nicolaides briefly referred to an unnamed prince in his novel, which sold less than 10 copies.

Although Nicolaides has lived and worked in Thailand, he was ignorant to the consequences of the lese majeste law.

He does not intend to appeal the decision but would like to consider an application for royal pardon.


Flooded communities in North-West Queensland are undergoing a large re-supply this morning.
Over 10 tonnes of dry food and medication will be dropped into isolated communities.

More supplies will arrive in the region later this month as some areas are expected to be cut off for as long as 6 weeks.


The Red Cross is in desperate need of blood donations because of the dengue fever outbreak in the states north.

The virus outbreak means blood donations cannot be taken from affected areas, which means the Red Cross is hundred of donations short a week.

Just under 150 people have been struck by the virus in Cairns alone.


It is predicted that the impact of global warming will affect Aborigines living in remote areas more than other Australians.

Reporters for the medical journal of Australia urge the government to improve Aboriginal health and housing, as the temperatures in the tropical north and interior are tipped to rise by 3 degrees Celsius by 2050.

The Federal Government aims to help lead global negotiations this year on a post-Kyoto climate pact.


Property owners in Queensland's mining and tourism centers are preparing for plunging prices.

This stems from the Access Economics report, which tipped Australia to be heading for a deep recession, particularly Queensland.

RP Data research analyst Cameron Kusher, predicts that as tourism continues to slow down, North Queensland, The Whitsundays, and to some extent the Gold and Sunshine coasts will begin to feel the impact.


22 days after war broke out in Gaza which began in later part December last year, a ceasefire has been reached between Israel and Palestine.

The end of fighting may not be long lived though, as Hamas announced it will re-engage attacks if Palestine does not withdraw from the area by Sunday.

Over 1300 Palestinians have been killed in the 3 weeks of fighting, more than 400 of which were children.


The countdown in Washington has begun for the swearing in ceremony of the 44th president of the “United States Of America”, “Barack Obama”.

The soon to be president won his place over 2 months ago but will officially begin work in the early hours of tomorrow morning, Brisbane time.

Obama will take the reigns of a nation with over 7% unemployment but has vowed to create as many as 2 million jobs for Americans.
